A slow drain is a warning. One slow drain usually means a local clog. Several at once usually means the main line.
Common causes
- Grease and food. Kitchen drains clog with grease and food scraps.
- Hair and soap. Bath and shower drains.
- Main line blockage. Several drains slow or backing up at the same time.
- Venting problems. Gurgling and slow drains can mean a blocked vent.
- Failed pumps. In basements, a failed ejector or sink pump backs things up.
What you can check first
- Is it one drain or many? Many means stop using water and call
- Skip chemical drain cleaners, they damage pipes
- Clean the stopper and trap on a bathroom sink
When to call a plumber
- Several drains are slow or backing up
- Water comes up in a floor drain or tub
- A basement pump is not keeping up
How we fix it
We clear the clog and tell you why it happened. If it is the main line or a pump, we fix that too, and we check whether a failing pump can be cleared before recommending a new one.

Slow & Clogged Drains FAQ
Are chemical drain cleaners safe?
We do not recommend them. They can damage pipes and rarely clear the real clog.
Why does my drain keep clogging?
The blockage is further down the line or there is a pipe problem. We find it.
