Hard Water & Well Water Problems
Scale, stains, rotten egg smell or cloudy water? What your water is telling you.
Reviewed by Micky Cipolla, NJ Master Plumber #13478
A lot of homes in our area run on private wells, and even town water can be hard. Your fixtures, water heater and skin all feel it.
Common causes
- Hardness. Calcium and magnesium leave white scale and wear out heaters and valves.
- Iron. Orange and brown stains on fixtures and laundry.
- Sediment. Grit that clogs aerators, filters and water heaters.
- Pressure tank problems. Pressure swings and a pump that clicks on and off.
What you can check first
- Look for white crust on faucets and shower heads
- Check for orange stains in toilets and sinks
- Notice whether your water heater pops or rumbles
- Get your well water tested if it has been a while
When to call a plumber
- Water heaters are wearing out early
- Stains keep coming back
- Pressure swings on a well
How we fix it
We install water softeners and whole-house filtration sized to your water and home, and we service well pressure tanks on the in-house side of the system.
